On November 14, 2024, at the 11th ABEC, Advanced Batteries for xEV/ESS Conference, Guangzhou, China in Nansha, Guangzhou, Wang Jin, chairman of Han’s SLE, delivered a keynote speech "Casting a Shield of Safety and Reliability for the Whole Life Cycle of Battery Production", which deeply analyzed the status quo, challenges and countermeasures of the lithium battery industry, and emphasized the core position of safety and reliability in battery production.
1. Opportunities and Challenges Coexist in the New Energy Industry
Wang Jin said that the huge demand for lithium batteries in the field of domestic new energy vehicles will promote the continued growth of the power battery market, and it is expected that the penetration rate of new energy vehicles will reach 60% in 2025, and ships, power tools, drones, low-altitude aircraft and other fields will also bring new driving forces for the battery industry, which will boost China's battery industry towards the TWh era in 2025. In the field of energy storage, the markets in China, the United States and Europe maintain a high growth rate, large storage and household storage continue to break out, and the rise of the energy storage market has brought continuous good news to the lithium battery industry.
In the field of battery technology innovation, semi-solid and solid-state batteries will become the main technological development direction in the next stage. However, the development of the industry is also facing challenges such as cyclical adjustment, profit differentiation, technological innovation pressure and environmental protection requirements.
2. The Industry Works Together to Build a Line of Defense for Battery Safety
In terms of safety, Wang Jin said that lithium battery is a special energy storage device, battery safety is always the core concern of users, and the design end, manufacturing end and material end of the battery are directly related to the important links of battery safety.
At the design end, he stressed that the safety design of the battery cell structure, BMS battery management system and battery thermal management system is extremely critical, which fundamentally determines whether the battery can be stored and used safely for a long time in various application scenarios.
In the manufacturing process, the laser welding process of Han’s SLE ensures the safety of the battery cell, and adopts multiple safety measures in the equipment design, multiple management systems to ensure the quality of the equipment, and multi-stage comprehensive quality management. In the warehouse storage process, lithium batteries face risks such as thermal runaway, overcharge and overdischarge, which requires a very high battery storage environment.
At the material end, the safety problem of lithium batteries should be analyzed from the root, for example, ternary materials and lithium iron phosphate batteries have their own advantages and disadvantages. In terms of safety and energy density endurance, the two materials batteries need to find a more appropriate balance point. At the same time, increase the development of new solid-state batteries that are safer and have higher energy density, however, at present, due to the lack of advantage in cost, it is impossible to achieve mass loading, and in the future, with the progress of battery technology and the decline of manufacturing costs, solid-state batteries are expected to achieve the loading goal of some models.
3. Lithium Equipment Builds a Line of Defense for Battery Reliability
In terms of reliability, Wang Jin believes that equipment reliability is related to battery performance, production efficiency and product quality. Han’s SLE builds high-reliability equipment through component reliability verification, strict quality control and continuous technological innovation to ensure that the output of equipment has a high degree of consistency in specifications, performance, quality and life cycle.
